What is Stroke?

A stroke, also known as cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is the rapid loss of brain functions due to the lack of blood flow caused by blockage such as thrombosis, arterial embolism and hemorrhage. When the blood vessels get clogged, the brain cells become deprived from nutrients and oxygen as there is no blood supply. Eventually, that part of the brain starts to die. A stroke occurs. The results of having stroke are impairments in memory, speech ability and physical mobility.

According to National Stroke Association of Malaysia, stroke is the third largest cause of death in Malaysia.

The types of stroke is divided into three:
  • Ischemic stroke-It is main type of stroke. It is due to blockage of blood vessels supplying the brain.
  • Hemorrhagic stroke-It is due to bleeding into or around the brain.
  • Transient ischemic stroke(TIA)- A mini-stroke

Stroke is the third largest cause of death in Malaysia. Only heart diseases and cancer kill more. It is considered to be the single most common cause of severe disability, and every year, an estimated 40,000 people in Malaysia suffer from stroke. Anyone can have a stroke, including children, but the vast majority of the cases affect adults. - National Stroke Association Malaysia

Hey maybe it'd be good to add in some first aid tips? ;)

Or adding some new info like symptoms ? :)

Put the 5W to detail more about stroke, I mean as in words.

to anonymous: the info on symptoms can be obtained under the stroke - signs and symptoms section.=D

Dear anonymous, we have taken your suggestion and added a video on first aid for stroke (http://thepaththatcannotbeblocked.blogspot.com/2012/03/video-first-aid-for-stroke.html).
Thanks for your suggestion and do feel free to ask more questions, if there are any. :)

i didn't know that there were so many types of strokes..=.=

It is clear that clot type stroke causes stroke because no oxygen reaches the brain through the blood. But in the case of bleed type stroke, why does the patient receive stroke even though the blood still flows to the brain and the brain could still possibly receive oxygen (despite the fact that that the blood is leaking out)?

Perhaps you could add some statistics regarding the number of deaths in Malaysia due to stroke. That's our suggestion. :)

Lao Sia Kia,

The brain is very sensitive to bleeding and damage can occur very rapidly. Bleeding irritates the brain tissue, causing swelling. Bleeding collects into a mass called a hematoma. The expanding hematoma compresses the brain tissue and later injures it. Bleeding also increases pressure on the brain which will destroy the brain tissue or limit the blood supply. The bleeding which destroys the brain tissue leads to stroke.

Le Cancer Du Poumon,

We have taken your suggestion into consideration and have added the statistics into the article. Thanks!
